「我々に見えるもは既に頭の中にあり、頭の中にある物は見ることができる。」

     

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE IMAGES

I can think of few photographic conquests greater than getting a shot of god.

So, as whacky as this concept may sound, I present these photographs; some of which I think could be quite easily argued in favor of that.

Why this topic?

While photographing the Cabrillo monument in San Diego several years ago, I was amazed at what occured in the sky before me. The clouds did some strange things that I struggled to understand at the moment. So I just took pictures of it … and later I printed the best of the lot.

#4 CABRILLO’S BURDEN

In the frame on the right, an angry wolf faces off with Cabrillo, smoke pouring from his snout, while his feathered mane is erect and perhaps regal. Opposite the wolf, a sun-glassed man with beard and a bulbous nose observes. Then, there is the mysterious subdued torso of an alien-like figure in the lower left corner, arms curiously cocked in some specific position.

Was the photographer’s imagination on the loose, or was there, perhaps, something more at work?

Humans, more or less, think they know a lot of things. But in reality, it is not true.

If you get honest for a moment, and acknowledge there are so many stars — too many to even count by the best efforts of the wisest of our species — above us that hold secrets we will never understand, then you can begin to look at life through a new lens.

I was born Roman Catholic, so I had always been told a story of one god. Why would I believe anything else? This story is all I ever knew, as a child.

In Japan, there are many gods … too many to count, in fact.

American indigenous people have quite a few gods as well. How about Hawaiians? Ever hear about the volcano god, or the great white shark god?

And then there are the original people in Australia, a place people from there call “Ugari.”

The Europeans named it “Australia.”

But when it comes to the subject of gods, there is much to discuss with the intriguing gentle people who originate from a place nick-named “Oz.” And one would be lucky if they had the pleasure of sitting with a native person from there to hear what they have to say about it all.

In our modern societies all around this lovely planet, people are busy. They are busy chasing some dream depicted in advertising campaigns which have been engineered to convince us all, “we do not yet have enough, and we need to achieve more and ‘get’ more.”

More money, more jewelry, more houses, more titles, more status … on and on it goes.

Most people are innocent-minded, and go along with little resistance. And, as a result, they are far too busy to look around … I mean really look around and observe the miracle planet we call “Earth.” I believe the correct spelling should be “Urth,” but that is just one man’s opinion.

The mysteries of our existence are still very very active … and I would argue are happening right now, to your left, to your right, up and down … all around. This is the nature of life. It is a mystic phenomenon.

But we, in this busy modern world, generally walk right past and never slow down long enough to notice what is really going on before our very eyes.

If a worn out golden leaf that falls from it’s branch lands on the broad leaf of a lush evergreen plant below it, does that plant feel it? And does the plant smile, or is it just a stupid fantasy to think like that?

As smart as we think we are as a species, we know crap.

Who among us humans today could ever build a pyramid, like the ones in Giza?

Ha ha … no one!

Who can explain all about our past, thousands of generations ago … and all the fantastic and amazing things discovered by explorers and scientists who are interested in such things?

My point is this.

You cannot look at a photo and say it is nonsense. You may not feel it is good — or the subject may not interest you — but you cannot rule out whether or not something is really going on.

Just like when you bump into someone in some far corner of the globe — someone you once knew before — and say, “wow, small world, such a coincidence.”

No way! I do not believe like that.

Things are they way they are for a reason. The influences of life are very unclear. Many people try to explain it all with a definitive book, but that is all but a fool’s game.

Nobody can explain what we are, where we are and why we are the way we are. But many have done just that; and they are willing to kill to enforce their theories written in their books.

Well, if you want to … you can just go wander about and drink from a stream or gather some roots or berries for lunch in the hills, easily you can do that. You can do that here on Earth. At least you were meant to be able to do that here on Earth.

But you may want to bring along your camera, because you might encounter god.

And you would want a photo of that, now wouldn’t you?

神の技より凄い事を成し遂げたと思える写真があります。

この概念は風変りに聞こえるかもしれませんが、ここでご紹介する写真の何枚かは、私の主張の裏付けになると考えています。

なぜこのテーマなのか？

数年前、サンディエゴ、カブリヨ国定記念公園での撮影中、目の前の空で起きた出来事に私は非常に驚かされました。あの瞬間に雲が起こした奇跡は私の理解を超えた物だったのです。私はただシャッターを押しただけですが、後に現像した写真は最高の出来でした。

フレームの右側で、羽根飾りの付いたタテガミを王者らしくナビかせて、突き出た鼻から煙を出して怒ったオオカミがカブリリヨと対決しています。オオカミの反対側では、サングラスをかけたひげ面で団子鼻の男がそれを観察しています。左下隅は、腕を特異な位置に奇妙にかしげた宇宙人の姿のようなミステリアスで控えめな胴体あります。

自由なカメラマンの創造の賜物なのか、あるいはそれ以上の何かが作用したのか？

人は多くの事を知っているつもりでいますが、それは実際には正しくありません。   少しの間素直な気持ちになって、無数の星が存在することに感謝しましょう — 最も賢明であるはずの我々人類が、最善の努力を行ってさえ数えきれない星々 — 我々が決して把握しきれない秘密を抱え、頭上で輝いています。

そうすることで、あなたは新しい見方で生命を見つめることが出来るようになります。

私はローマカトリック教徒の家に生まれ、一神教の教えの元で育てられました。何故他の何かを信じるのか？子供のころには、そのことしか知りませんでした。

日本には沢山の神がいます・・・実際、数えるには多すぎるくらいです。

アメリカの先住民には、同様に相当な数の神がいます。ハワイ人はどうでしょう？これまでに、火山神またはホオジロザメの神について聞いたことはありますか？

そして、オーストラリアには元祖の人類がいて、その場所を「Ugari」と呼んでいます。

ヨーロッパ人はそれを「オーストラリア」と名付けました。

しかし、神をテーマにした場合、そこは「Oz.」と呼ばれ、そこに住む魅力的で、穏やかな人々と議論すべきことが沢山あるのです。「Oz」出身のネイティブ達と一緒に座って、彼らの話を聞くことができるなら、それは大変幸福なことです。

この美しい惑星における我々の現代社会では、人々は多忙です。みんなを納得させるためにつくられたキャンペーン広告に描かれた夢「我々はまだ足りていません。我々はより多くを達成し、より多くの物を『得る』必要があります」に踊らされ、とても忙しいのです。

より多くのお金、より多くの宝石、より多くの家、より多くのタイトル、より多くの地位・・・などなど、きりがありません。

大部分の人々は純真で、ほとんど抵抗しません。その結果として、彼らは、忙しすぎて周りを見る時間を失ってしまいます・・・つまり、私が伝えたいことは、我々が「地球」と呼ぶ奇跡の惑星をしっかり見つめて欲しいということです。私は地球（Earth）の正しいつづりは、「Urth」でなければならないと思っています。しかし、それは単に1人の人間の戯言なのでしょう。

我々の存在の謎は、未だたくさん起こり続けています・・・今現在、あなたの左で、右で、上で、下で、あちらこちらで起こっていると宣言します。これは、生命の性質であり、神秘的な現象なのです。

それでも、忙しい現在社会に住む我々は、ほとんどの場合ただそれを通り過ぎていくだけです。スピードを落として、まさしく目の前で何が本当に起きているのかに気づくための十分な時間を取ろうとはしません。

枯れて金色に色づいた葉が枝から落ちて、その下の緑豊かな常緑植物の広い葉っぱの上に落ちたとして、その植物はそれを感じるでしょうか？そのことで植物は微笑みますか？こんな風な考えは、ばかげた妄想でしょうか？

私たちは自分たちが考えるほど本当に賢い種なのでしょうか。 ギザにあるようなピラミッドを作れる人はいるでしょうか？

おそらく・・・いないでしょうね。

何千世代も前の私たちの全ての過去・・・そして、それらに興味を持った探検家や科学者によって発見された全ての素晴らしくて驚くべき物を説明できる人はいるでしょうか？

私が伝えたいことは、

写真を見ることが出来ない状態で、それがナンセンスだと断言することはできません。それがいいと感じないかもしれません―あるいは、テーマはあなたに興味を起こさせないかもしれません―でも、何かが実際に起こっている可能性を否定することは出来ないはずです。

あなたは世界の遠い片隅で、誰かにばったり出会ったとします―あなたが昔知っていた誰かに―思わず口に出してしまうでしょう「わあ、世界は小さいですね。すごい偶然ですね」、と。

でも、私は、そうは思いません。

全てに理由があるはずです。生命の及ぼす影響は、不確かなことばかりです。多くの人々は権威のある書物でそれの全てを定義付けしようとします。しかし、それは馬鹿げたゲームでしかありません。

誰も、我々が何であるのか、我々がどこにいるのか、そして、我々がなぜこうであるのかを説明することができません。しかし、大勢の人がそれを行ってきました：彼らは、本に書かれる理論を主張するために喜んで人を殺すでしょう。

しかし・・・あなたはもし自らが望めば、ぶらぶらと歩き周り、流れる小川から水を飲んだり、丘の上で、昼食のために根菜や木苺を収穫することだって出来るのです、とても簡単に。この地球で、この場所で、あなたはそうすることができるのです。少なくとも、この地球は、あなたがそうすることができうる場所だったはずです。

念のために、カメラは持ち歩いたほうがいいかもしれませんね、いつか神に遭遇する機会があるかもしれない。   その瞬間は、きっとあなたも写真を撮りたくなるでしょうから。
